Come and Enjoy the Scenery in Clapham, SW4
Clapham started out as a small parish owned by just one family. In the 17th century many country houses were built as it was a good place for wealthy merchants. With the introduction of railways, Clapham became a suburban area and the upper classes grew tired of it. Various houses were erected after many estates were brought down.
Clapham is the home of the Clapham Common, one of London and the United Kingdom’s major parks, a huge area of 220 hectares with three ponds and some Georgian and Victorian mansions overlooking it. The Holy Trinity Clapham church which overlooks the park is important in terms of history as it is connected to the evangelical Clapham Sect. Because of its size, the Clapham Common is too large to be only in Clapham, and half of it is in the London Borough of Lambeth, and the other half, within the London Borough of Wandsworth. The park has a lot of amenities: sporting facilities for cricket, football, rugby, a skate venue, and its three ponds: Cock Pond, Eagle Pond and Mount Pond, the latter two being historical features.
Clapham Old Town is of the richer places in the city, it has a mixture of period structures of Victorian, Georgian and Queen Anne eras. It is formed by of Clapham High Street (the main market and shop street), Clapham Manor Street (which houses the Clapham Leisure Centre), and Venn Street, which contains a Picturehouse cinema, a food market, and many expensive restaurants for the people who can afford them. The main shopping areas where you can find almost everything you could need are: Clapham High Street, Abbeville Road, and Nightingale Lane.
